Today we learned about the ecosystem and how things work together in the ocean from Aunty Lahela and aunty Leʻa. We learned that everything in the ocean needs each other if it is a plant an animal or nonliving thing. Aunty Lahela brought masks of Limu Kohu, Koʻa, Mano Niuhi, Honu, Aholehole and Heʻe We decorated them and talked about how they are related. Aunty Lahela had us choose a mask to color. After coloring our creatureʻs we went into our groups and formed a circle.  We talked about these creatures role in this ecosystem.
By connecting a pink string to each animal or plant we talked about connection between each other and plants living on land.

'Unahi i'a & Tro Net w/ uncle Chu (July 19th)

Today we cleaned fish and threw net. Our teacher was uncle Chu.  The net parts are the piko, the eye and the skirt with the lead.  First you separate the net in three equal parts.   One on your shoulder another on your knee and then one in the middle that you grab in your hand. Grab the one on  your knee and throw it like a frisbee.

We cleaned fish at Umeakapuhi where the puhi (eel) come out and eat the guts. So, you need a fork, spoon or a knife to clean fish. The kinds of fish we cleaned were Aholehole, Uhu, Nenue and Manini.  When the fish is scaled you have to take all the guts out even the gills.  Uncle Chu will send you back if you did not do it right.

Yesterday we went to Honokea fishponds.  We learned that it was named Honokea because of the white sand which was washed away by a tsunami and replaced by black sand.  At the fishpond we cleared weeds and removed any unnecessary rocks from the outlining pond walls.  In addition, we also learned that aholeholes were raised in the ponds in the old days and still are to this very day.  Aunty Kamala showed us that we had to kick up all the silt and gunk from the bottom of the pond so that it would be able to flush out through the makaha.  To do this we had to get in the pond while forming a line; then walk/swim across the pond kicking and stirring up the mud under neath us as we went.  As we did this the water became murky and stink.  When all our duties were fulfiled we were free to swim and eat as much food as we wanted.  Later we practiced our chants and hand games that we will be performing tomorrow at our Hoʻike.

This is my second time at O ka aina  and I am having a lot of fun. Today we all woke up at around 6 o'clock in the morning ( that was just the girls). Then we walked to Waiuli to lay the net and to splash the water to scare all the fish into the net. Then we ate lunch at Waiuli and like always they had yummy food.
